It was announced late yesterday that JAY-Z and Beyoncé will be receiving a GLAAD Media Vanguard Award this year for their allyship to the LGBTQ community.
GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said great things about The Carters, issuing a press statement declaring:
“Beyoncé and JAY-Z are global icons and passionate defenders of human rights and acceptance for all people… when Beyoncé and JAY-Z speak, the world becomes inspired and when it comes to LGBTQ people, their voices of acceptance have been heard loud and clear. We could not be prouder to stand with them to send a message of love during the biggest LGBTQ event in the world and to honor their work to bend the arc of justice forward for LGBTQ people, people of color, and marginalized communities everywhere.”
The two have a long history promoting the acceptance and recognition of LGBTQ rights. Most recently, Beyoncé spoke out against laws that could potentially discriminate against the LGBTQ community in North Carolina, and JAY-Z released the video for his 4:44 track “Smile” detailing his mother’s coming out.
The 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards will take place Thursday, March 28 in Los Angeles.
