I was fortunate enough to spend my Monday afternoon seeing a screening of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Below are my spolierish-free thoughts on the movie. Obviously I won’t give away any major plot points, but I will speak in general about the movie. So if you want to go in completely fresh, well, thanks for clicking on this but feel free to punt now.

Onto the review!

  • I liked it! A lot more than I thought I would. I am a big Star Wars fan but came into this thing a bit worried, given the director change and the fact the kid playing Han appeared as charismatic as a newspaper left out in the rain, but it blew my expectations away. It was a lot of fun.
  • We all owe Alden Ehrenreich an apology. A lot was made about him playing Han Solo, but he did great. It takes a bit to get used to someone besides Harrison Ford playing Solo, kinda like when you walk out of a dark movie theater on a sunny day, but once you adjust it all just feels right. Trying to embody such an iconic character that so many people love is a pretty thankless task, but he was more than up for the challenge.
  • Donald Glover is just as cool and amazing as Lando Calrissian as he has been in all your daydreams. Dude straight up owns the screen whenever he is on, just oozing coolness. He doesn’t have a huge role, but it is almost better that way. It is just the right amount to leave you wanting more.
  • Speaking of wanting more, there will be more Solo. It is clear they are looking to turn this into a franchise and I am totally here for it. I immediately wanted more Solo as I walked out of the theater.
  • I hope the potential sequel is called Solo II: A Star Wars Story Now With 69% More Lando.
  • The intro to Chewbacca is the stuff of legends. I think people are going to love it. I’d watch an entire movie of Han and Chewie just hanging out on the Falcon. There is one scene in particular that you never knew you needed in your life until you see it happen on the big screen.
  • This is a Star Wars origin story so of course there are plenty winks, nods, and other fan service elements, but they never get too cute with it or go too over-the-top. Doesn’t distract from the overall flick.

That’s about all I can say without giving too much else away. Excited for everyone else to see it so we can all talk about it. I hope all the other Star Wars fans dug it as much as I did.
