In addition to making your mornings suck less on Go 96.3’s Morning Show, Dana Wessel is our station’s resident cinephile. Think of him like Ebert, Roper and Siskel combined, but way cooler. Check out his weekly movie preview below.

Three pack of sequels this weekend. Something new and different this summer! Onto the movies!

July 19

The Equalizer II Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Ashton Sanders, Melissa Leo, and Bill Pullman

What’s the deal?

They….they made a first Equalizer? Huh. Well I’ll be. I totally forgot about that. I am sure a lot of you did too! But it made over $100 million dollars and there is a rule in Hollywood that any movie that makes over $100 million must have a sequel.

This once again stars again Denzel Washington doing badass Denzel Washington stuff. He plays the Robert McCall aka Equalizer and is out for revenge in this one after his friend is murdered. I don’t want to give too much away but I am guessing he raises his voice and does some really violent stuff. Just a hunch.

Should you go?

Looks like a perfectly fine mindless action movie. I am guessing you don’t need to have a big working knowledge of the original or the TV show it is based on to enjoy it. If you’re a Denzel fan I am sure you will find enough here to like.

Mama Mia! Here We Go Again – Lily James, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper, Cher, and Meryl Streep.

What’s the deal?

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANCING QUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!

The movie with all ABBA songs is back for more. The first one, which is somehow 10 years old already, grossed over $600 million dollars worldwide (that isn’t a joke) so it is no surprise they made a sequel. Just took them a decade to get the ensemble band back together and to write a sequel, seeing as there wasn’t a second broadway play.

This one is half sequel, half prequel. It splits time between how the events of the first movie came to be and what is happening in the Mama Mia-verse five years after the orig’. The main players from the first film are back (Amanda Seyfried: still enchanting, Pierce Brosnan: still a handsome, handsome man).

I saw the first one and it was fine, I get the appeal but I am more of a Barden Bellas kinda guy. I think it’s funny that it is called Here We Go Again because I bet there are a bunch of spouses that got dragged to the first one that are rolling their eyes saying “here we go again…”

Should you go?

This one is already getting better reviews than the first one did so it seems like fans should be happy.

Unfriended II: Dark Web – You’ve never heard of any of them.

What’s the deal?

The orig’ was a found-footage horror movie about cyber-bullying that went on to be a sleeper-hit. Like every other found-footage movie (think Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity) it was made for less than a million bucks and went on to gross $64 million. I took my only economics class in college pass/fail, but I am pretty sure that is good return on investment.

The sequel revolves around a kid finding a laptop and discovering it has some disturbing footage. The person who owns the laptop is out to get him and his friends. OK, sure.

Should you Go?

I mean, it’ll be on Netflix in like two weeks…

Weekly Rundown

Current box office champ: Hotel Transylvania III made $44 million dollars while Rock’s Skyscraper bombed, making just $25 million. Poor Rock.

This week’s predicted champ: Looks like a toss-up between Mamma Mia and Equalizer. I’d put my money on the Mia of the Mama!

What opens next week? Mission:Impossible 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited for this movie. It is gonna be great. The early reviews are already fantastic.
