In addition to making your mornings suck less on Go 96.3’s Morning Show, Dana Wessel is our station’s resident cinephile. Think of him like Ebert, Roper and Siskel combined, but way cooler. Check out his weekly movie preview below.

Remember how no other movies came out last weekend because nobody wanted to open the same weekend as the dinosaurs? Well, nobody really wanted to open the weekend after the dinos, either. A couple softer releases this weekend to round out June before Marvel, Mama Mia, and Mission:Impossible roll out in July. Onto the movies!

June 29

Uncle Drew – Basketball players Kyrie Irving, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie. Oh, and some actual actors, too. Lil Rel Howery, Tiffany Haddish, Erica Ash, J. B. Smoove, Mike Epps, and Nick Kroll.

What’s the deal?

Have you ever wondered if a mildly amusing 30-second commercial would make for a great feature-length movie? We are about to find out!

Remember seeing the Pepsi (or Coke or Mountain Dew, whatever, I don’t really remember) commercial that featured Kyrie Irving and some other NBA players dressing up as old men and wiping the court with some wannabes on the playground court? It was a funny enough premise, sure, but now it is a full movie featuring tons of current and former NBA/WNBA players.

The story here follows Dax (played by stand-up Lil Rel Howery) who spends his life savings to enter a street ball tournament at the famed Rucker Park. His team bails on him and he is SOL until he tracks down the legendary Uncle Drew (played by Irving) and his old teammates to come out of retirement. This is a ’90s underdog sports movie except…in reverse, I guess? Now instead of some scrappy youngsters playing kids bigger than them it is some old dudes trying to relive their glory. I bet it comes down to the final possession of the championship game!!!

Should you go?

Ah, sure, why not? It could be fun. Yeah, it looks like a gigantic 90 minute commercial for Nike and other brands, but it has some funny actors and entertaining basketball players. Underdog sports movies are always fun. Worth a summer flyer.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Isabela Moner, Jeffrey Donovan, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener.

What’s the deal?

They made a sequel to Sicario! Nice! I totally forgot this was coming. Sicario was one of the better movies of 2015 but kind of flew under the radar so you might have missed it. The original was a tense drug thriller with FBI and the Mexican cartel. Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin return for the sequel, but sadly, Emily Blunt, who was outstanding in the first film, doesn’t have a spot in this one. But Benicio is back doing Benicio-type stuff, so I guess it isn’t all bad.

Should you go?

I’ll be honest, seeing the trailer just made me want to go back and watch the original. It has been a few years and I need to rewatch that. I have a hard time believing the second will live up to the orige’, but if you’re a big fan you are definitely going to want to see it.

Weekly Rundown

Current box office champ: Jurassic World with a $150 million dollar haul last weekend.

This week’s predicted champ: The dinos are going to repeat for at least another week, neither of the two new movies have a chance at taking them down.

What opens next week? Next week we get another Purge movie and a Marvel movie! Don’t get too excited, it’s just Ant Man and Ant Man sucks.
