VH1 continued the reboot of their once-annual Hip-Hop Honors telecast, paying homage to the biggest names in the culture. With elaborate nostalgia-heavy performances from Missy Elliott and Mariah Carey, as well as tributes to artist and personalities who tremendously impacted hip-hop in the ’90s.
Hosted by Girl Trip‘s Regina Hall, the night focused on hip-hop’s “game changers” and paid tribute to Carey, Hype Williams, Jermaine Dupri, Master P, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Big Pun and comedian Martin Lawrence.
The tributes to the honorees no longer with us were some of the evening’s most memorable moments as Mobb Deep’s Havoc and Lil Kim were joined by Fabolous to hold down Prodigy’s part on “Quiet Storm” and Remy Ma joined Fat Joe for Big Pun’s “Still Not a Player.”
But the biggest story might be the night’s opening number when Missy re-created Hype Williams’ ridiculously elaborate “She’s A B****” video. Between that and Mariah Carey having sailor back-up dancers for her Jermaine Dupri and Da Brat-assisted rendition of “Honey,” the visuals were a fun trip down memory lane, and a rightful honor.
