If you’re a fan of hip-hop and crass celebrations of monetary gain, boy do we have some news for you!
JAY-Z is officially hip-hop’s first billionaire.
According to Forbes, Jigga’s endeavors spanning the past four decades have “accumulated a fortune that conservatively totals $1 billion, making him one of only a handful of entertainers to become a billionaire — and the first Hip Hop artist to do so.”
While a few have disputed this claim considering Dr. Dre‘s sale of Beats to Apple in 2014 for $3.2 Billion, keep in mind that not all the money from that deal went directly into the good doctor’s pocket as it was reported he walked away with $620 Million – which doesn’t sound like much, but really adds up.
It’s interesting to run the numbers of the Forbes article as Jigga’s music only accounts for $75 Million of his wealth. By comparison, his art collection tips the scales at $70 Million. The bulk of his money comes from his Armand de Brignac champagne ($320 Million) and $220 Million in investments – including a $70 Million stake in Uber, which he originally paid $2 Million for in 2013.
