This is not a satire or parody. This is not speculation or barstool hearsay. This really happened.

Rapper Lil Xan was rushed to the hospital yesterday. News of the overdose broke today, as did the substance in question. “Not drugs,” the rapper was quick to clarify, but allegedly Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

We’re serious.

Xan stated in an Instagram post {all sic everything}  “I guess I ate too many Hot Cheetos and I guess it ripped something in my stomach open, so I puked a little blood..,” adding “Just wanna let everyone know that I’m good, healthier then I’ve ever been and ready to kick of my third Tour in NY ina couple days ! Also be careful, Hot Cheetos are one hell of a drug aha.”

Flamin Hot Cheetos have been a favorite snack in hip-hop, celebrated in rhymes by everyone from Kendrick Lamar to Jeezy to Isaiah Rashad. Both Clairo and Y.N.RichKids had their career-making breakout hits named after the spicy treat. Thus, Xan’s potential libel of the snack registers in the same category of hip-hop heresy as his dissing of 2Pac last March.

While there has been no history of health complications caused by Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, a 2012 CBS News article cited doctors at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital who said the beloved snack only caused an influx of emergency room visits because, when eaten in tremendous excess, the red dye mimics certain intestinal-issue symptoms. This is not unique to Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, however, as both red peppers and beets when consumed in excess have had the same effect.

We reached out to Cheetos-manufacturer Frito Lay for a statement, who told us:

At Frito-Lay, we aim to delight our consumers and food safety is always our number one priority. Flamin’ Hot Cheetos meet all applicable food safety regulations, as well as our rigorous quality standards. That said, we realize some consumers may be more sensitive to spicy foods than others and may choose to moderate consumption or avoid spicier snacks due to personal preference.

When consumers have questions or concerns about any of our products, we are available to answer their questions through our dedicated Consumer Relations team.
