Gather the kids, Nicki Minaj is back in full force!
Remember that Nicki Minaj we fell in love with as she stole the show on Kanye West‘s “Monster” back in 2010? The hyper-stylized syllable-slaughtering queen of Queens? She’s back resurrected all of her unhinged hyper-active creativity for her two new videos “Chun-Li” and “Barbie Tingz.”
“Chun-Li” lifts motifs from 90s Chinese martial arts cinema but adorns it with fashion made popular in Tokyo’s Harajuku district. Given Street Fighter‘s Chun-Li is a Chinese character from a Japanese fighting game, the cross-cultural influences work.
“Barbie Tingz” gives us Street Nicki and Hollywood Nicki, isolating the rapper and her ideas in front of a white background, condensing an entire career’s worth of her appeal into one clip. It’s a bold choice that pays off given the song and clip’s jabs at how many have attempted to emulate her and fallen far short.
