Ahead of SZA‘s sizzling sold out set at First Avenue this Friday, she’s surprised many with a new collaboration with Maroon 5. Not a mash-up, not a remix, not a drill, we have a full-fledged Maroon 5 featuring SZA joint.
In the tradition of the more recent hip-hop influenced Maroon 5 material like the Future-assisted “Cold” and last year’s “Don’t Wanna Know” with SZA’s T.D.E. labelmate Kendrick Lamar, “What Lovers Do” occupies that same cross-generational edges soundscape that Maroon 5 has always thrived within.
For those keeping score at home, SZA has a larger presence on here than the previous Maroon 5 hip-hop guest spots, so either the group is on the verge of going full boom-bap, or (more likely) SZA is an absolute force who is going to continue burning brighter.
While there’s still no date for the next Maroon 5 album, SZA has two singles on the billboard 100 from her album Ctrl, “The Weekend” and the Travis Scott collaboration “Love Galore.”
