This past weekend’s new episode of Saturday Night Live was a big night for hip-hop. Chance the Rapper hosted, and Eminem was the featured musical guest. Instead of doing the show’s standard two-song performance, Eminem took the Prince route and did an elongated single musical performance, weaving three of his hits into one Emine-medley.
Joined by Skylar Grey, Em opened with his latest single, “Walk on Water.” From there, he touched on the now 17-year-old “Stan” and finished with 2010’s “Love the Way You Lie.” While the moody Em still prefers to have most of his face obscured by a black baseball cap/hoodie combination, his live performance seems to now be a public catharsis.
While fans were surprised he didn’t perform a new song from his forthcoming album, Revival, the career-spanning selections seemed to reaffirm exactly what an unshakable cornerstone of pop culture Mr. Mathers has been for this side of the millennium. Em was also absent from the night’s sketches, although he did appear in these delightful promos.
