While Kevin Gates is unable to tour at the moment due to a prior obligation to prison, that didn’t stop him from dropping one of the year’s most infectious tracks in “What If?” Now, Gates’ latest has an official video with a personal message from the MC at its conclusion.
For those who haven’t entered the latest Gates, “What If?” is a remake of Joan Osbourne‘s late-90s standard “What If God Was One of Us?” Putting a new spin on the melody and walking his spiritual conflicted persona out perfectly, the video treatment has a lot to live up to, a feat made even more challenging without the rapper present.
Fortunately, the video’s director Walu (Dej Loaf‘s “In Living Color,” Tory Lanez’s “Say It”) does a great job fitting in compelling narratives of compassion and sly editing to give the impression of Gates’ presence.
We do get a brief glimpse of Gates through his handwritten note at the video’s conclusion. Inspiring and thought-provoking as only Gates can be, it succeeds in reminding us why he’s one of hip-hop’s most intriguing figures.
