LL Cool J is the first hip-hop recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor. A lifetime achievement award for those in the performing arts, the Honors have been celebrated annually since 1978, with LL last night – at age 49 – being the youngest honoree to ever get the nod.
He has ventured into the worlds of television, film, and even hosting the Grammys several years in a row. Still following Mama’s orders to knock us out, LL continues to tour his decades of hits to this day, packing one of the most satisfying 90-plus-minute live shows in the entire culture.
Joining LL in receiving honors this year are Lionel Richie, Carmen de Lavallade, Norman Lear and Gloria Estefan. LL has humbly taken to social media to state the honor is bigger than him and will open the doors for further deserving hip-hop acts.
