A tribute to the classic Shaw Brothers kung-fu films of the 70’s, we see SZA and Kendrick spar in the desert as well as flashback to SZA utilizing weapons-based combat. The motif is tremendous, and is a nod to how intertwined hip-hop and classic kung-fu films have always been.
Chinese martial-arts cinema was often the best deal in entertainment in New York during the rise of hip-hop, influencing the fashion, slang and vocal tones of the pioneering MCs. While it later would be most closely associated with Wu-Tang Clan (the borough of Staten Island being referred to as ‘Shaolin’ is perhaps the most famous homage) the fingerprints of kung-fu can be found throughout all of hip-hop history.
