The Simpsons has been on the air for 28 years, which makes it somewhat surprising that it wasn’t until last night that the show had its first one-hour special. Lucky for us, this hour of power was the hip-hop themed “The Great Phatsby” and featured some of rap’s heavy hitters.
The episode, which centered around Mr. Burns yearning to relive his youthful glory years and discovering a means to do it through a hip-hop artist who’s been influenced by his legacy. In addition to a grip of original music for the episode (including a remixed theme) put together by producer Jim Beanz (who handles the music for Fox’s Empire) the show contained cameos from rap legends Snoop Dogg, RZA and Common, as well as Keegan-Michael Key and Taraji P. Henson.
While not the first time we’ve seen hip-hop on The Simpsons (Cypress Hill in ’96 and 50 Cent in ’05 remain some of our favorite moments) it’s always good to see our favorite MCs Simpsonified!
