British indie-rockers Arctic Monkeys may have bummed out a few fans when frontman Alex Turner announced today that his band does not intend to release a single before the release of their forthcoming 6th album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino on May 11th.
While the decision by the band to buck the usual trend of releasing a single to preview and increase anticipation for a forthcoming album definitely flies in the face of traditional industry practices, bigger names like Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar and…uh…freaking Beyonce have proven in recent years that the element of surprise and mystery can be just as effective a promotional tool.
While Tranquility won’t be a full-blown surprise since we know the release date and song titles, Arctic Monkeys have been extremely protective of details about the album’s sound, clamping down on any leaks and not allowing so much as an errant Instagram story from the studio to see the light of day. The reason for all of this secrecy? Well, it might have to do with the heavy conceptual framework of Tranquility, which is intended to be the most story-oriented ‘Monkeys record to date.
While we wait patiently for May 11th, feel free to glean what little info you can from this teaser trailer:
