Right now, as I’m writing this, the hilarious runaway hit Crazy Rich Asians is tearing up the box office and is on its way into being a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Fans of the movie may have noticed a stirring, Chinese-language rendition of Coldplay‘s “Yellow” playing in the background and perfectly capturing the tone of a major moment in the film.
What you might not know is that it took an impassioned letter from Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu to convince the band to allow his film to use their song. You can read the whole letter at The Hollywood Reporter, but here’s an excerpt:
“[The word ‘yellow’] has always had a negative connotation in my life … until I heard your song. I remember seeing the music video in college for the first time on [MTV’s] TRL, That oner shot with the sun rising was breathtaking for both my filmmaker and music-loving side. It immediately became an anthem for me and my friends and gave us a new sense of pride we never felt before.”

– THANK GOODNESS! Interpol have expanded their reunion tour to include a Twin Cities date in February!
– Apparently Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains has a sniper rifle for an arm when it comes to baseball.
– Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers have formed an indie rock supergroup called Boygenius.
