When Joey Bada$$ first dropped the audio for his “Land of the Free” single on the eve of President Trump’s inauguration, it seemed like a timely bit of political commentary. Now that the video for “Land of the Free” is out, the song has become one of the most uncompromisingly visceral political messages of the year.
Directed by Nathan R. Smith and Joey himself, “Land of the Free” begins with some pleasant albeit Mad Max-esqe imagery of Joey educating youth of color and rapping with a modified American flag in the desert. Then, about 2/3 of the way through, we see what appears to be a commentary on the often fatal abuse of authority in the form of a firing squad, followed by close-up shots of a lynching and Klan rally, with further commentary.
Sure to get people talking with a message that can’t really be misconstrued, “Land of the Free” is will be featured on Joey’s upcoming sophomore album ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$, due out on April 7.
