In addition to making your mornings suck less on Go 96.3’s Morning Show, Dana Wessel is our station’s resident cinephile. Think of him like Ebert, Roper and Siskel combined, but way cooler. Check out his weekly movie preview below.

Looks like Shazam! was pretty universally loved last weekend and made $53 million at the box office. Apparently, DC has a franchise on their hands. A few big titles come out this weekend before things dry up ahead of Tony Stark and his merry group of Avengers come and demolish every box office record for a few weeks.

Onto the flicks!

April 12

Hellboy – David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Daniel Dae Kim, and Thomas Haden Church.

I get that comic book movies have been en vogue for seemingly ever now, but are there really people out there clamoring for another Hellboy movie? They made two Hellboy movies in the 2000s but a third never came to be. Instead, they rebooted thing thing because, well, why not? All the cool kids are doing it.

This time around they are going the Deadpool route by having the movie earn an R-rating for violence and swearing. So…if you’ve always wanted to hear Hellboy say naughty words…you’re in for a treat! The rest of us might wanna check out Shazam! or wait for Avengers for our superhero fix.

Missing Link – Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, David Walliams, Timothy Olyphant, Matt Lucas, Amrita Acharia, and Zach Galifianakis.

Yes! The Legend of Zelda movie we have all been waiting for! The script in this one is totally flipped from the games in the first feature film of the iconic video game franchise. Link goes missing and it is up to Princess Zelda to rescue him from the evil Ganondorf.

Sigh…if only…

But in all honesty, this Missing Link looks great. It is a stop-motion animated movie from the folks that also made the Oscar-nominated stop-motion films ParaNorman (shout out Anna Kendrick!) and Boxtrolls.

It tells the story of a monster investigator that heads to the northwest in search of a legendary bigfoot-like creature. It all looks very sweet, fun, and checks in at a tidy 95 minutes. Wooo!

This one also has a whole host of celebrity voices as you would expect, including the delightful Zoe Saldana. My only real gripe is that the Link character kinda reminds me of T.J. Miller and T.J. Miller is a pretty big douche.

Little – Regina Hall, Issa Rae, and Marsai Martin

This is not a drill, guys. We have a REVERSE BIG movie coming out this weekend. I dunno what it is about age-swap movies, but they never get old to me. Loved 13 Going on 30, 17 Again, and, obviously Big.

This one stars the hilarious Regina Hall plays Jordan Sanders, a cutthroat boss who ends up reverting back to her childhood self. Jordan then has to run the company as her younger self and probably learns a few lessons along the way. The younger Jordan is played by Marsai Martin (you recognize her as Diane on ABC’s Black-ish) who looks hilarious in this. Hopefully this is a big breakout role for her.

Alright, those are the movies coming out this week…and pretty much all the movies coming out between now and Avengers. We will check back in then. Unless you really want me to write something up about the Disney penguin documentary coming out next week. Nah, we’ll talk when Tony and the crew are back.
