Kehlani is nothing short of a multi-talented, rising R&B star.
The 22-year-old Oakland native’s latest album name, SweetSexySavage, couldn’t be a better way to describe her vibe and the character.
Since releasing her debut album in January, she has toured almost nonstop, and “Gangsta,” “CRZY” and “Distraction” have all found a happy home on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Before her Sweet Sexy Savage tour makes a stop at Myth this weekend, we look at the myriad ways she stands out as an artist and an individual.
Giving back seems to be second nature to the California-based singer. The once-homeless artist, recently used her birthday to spread the word about trainer and social media activist Chakabar’s fundraiser to build an orphanage in Congo.
Her tour is also a platform to collect donations for shelters in the cities where she performs. Kehlani recently collected a whole list of toiletries from Sacramento fans to be donated to Wellspring Women’s Center.
She’s reaching a larger base to spread the word about charitable efforts, but also giving back. In fact, two years ago Kehlani and her dancers surprised some young dancers who were rehearsing to her song “Alive.”
Speaking of her dance crew, a Kehlani concert is not only a loving environment, but also a performance full of fire choreography. Besides being a gifted vocalist, Kehlani also positively sets herself apart with her professional, energetic live shows.
Her openers for tour are also adding some spice to the SweetSexySavage tour experience. The St. Paul stop will include performances by Ella Mai and Jahkoy.
Ella Mai is London-born R&B singer who recently signed to DJ Mustard’s label. Her track “She Don’t” currently has almost 11 million plays on Spotify. In the song Ella has a sassy, confident message for a cheater, and the raspy guest bars from Ty Dolla $ign seal the deal.
On the other hand, the Canada-born Jahkoy will most likely offering up his soft sweet vocals on his crowd-favorite track called “California Heaven,” which features California’s own ScHoolboy Q. We can only hope that his set will also include a live rendition of his bad boy anthem, “F N Sexy.”
Although, the word “savage” may fit Kehlani’s down-to-earth mentality at least, she has proven that she takes big risks when it comes to showing dedication to her fans.
Kehlani recently had to cancel the European leg of her tour due to an emergency surgery on her hernia. After recovering, she demonstrated her savagery by crushing her first-ever Coachella performance.
This year, the Bay Area bae also confirmed she is in control of her own life. Kehlani has made her own struggle with mental illness into a positive and a relatable story. Here she is speaking to a crowd last year about suicide prevention. “From me to you,” she said. “You are worth it, you are perfect, you need to be here, you are meant to be here.”
